In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a powerful and supportive option for people facing fertility challenges who dream of having a baby.
IVF involves taking an egg from a woman’s ovaries and fertilizing it with sperm in a lab. The fertilized egg, now an embryo, is carefully placed back into the woman’s womb to grow. The Process of IVF in Details
Stage 1 : Preparing Your Body
You’ll begin by taking medication to gently pause your natural menstrual cycle. This step helps make the next stages of treatment more effective. The medication may be given as a daily injection (which you’ll be guided on how to give yourself) or as a nasal spray. This process usually takes around two weeks.
Stage 2 : Stimulating the Ovaries
Once your cycle is paused, you’ll take a fertility hormone, known as FSH, which encourages your ovaries to produce more eggs. This step increases the number of eggs available, giving the clinic more options for creating healthy embryos.
Stage 3 : Monitoring Progress
Your clinic will closely monitor your progress with ultrasound scans and, sometimes, blood tests. Before collecting the eggs, you’ll receive an injection of hCG, a hormone that helps the eggs fully mature.
Stage 4 : Collecting the Eggs
You’ll be sedated as your eggs are collected using a thin needle that goes through the vagina into the ovaries, guided by ultrasound. This minor procedure usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes. You may feel some mild cramps or light bleeding afterward.
Stage 5 : Fertilizing the Eggs
The collected eggs are fertilized in the lab, either with a fresh sperm sample from your partner or thawed donated sperm. The healthiest, most active sperm are carefully selected, and in some cases, a single sperm is injected directly into each egg, a method called ICSI (intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection). The fertilized embryos then grow in the lab for up to six days, and the best one or two embryos are chosen for transfer. After egg collection, you’ll also receive hormone support to help prepare your womb for the embryo.
Stage 6 : Transferring the Embryo
A few days later, the selected embryo(s) will be carefully placed in your womb through a thin tube, or catheter. This step is usually simple and doesn’t require sedation. You and your doctor will decide in advance how many embryos to transfer.
