Your IVF Journey: A Six-Stage Path to Parenthood

IVF
The Definition& The Process
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a powerful and supportive option for people facing fertility challenges who dream of having a baby.
IVF involves taking an egg from a woman’s ovaries and fertilizing it with sperm in a lab. The fertilized egg, now an embryo, is carefully placed back into the woman’s womb to grow. This process can use your eggs and your partner’s sperm or donated eggs and sperm, depending on what works best for your unique situation.
The Process of IVF in Details
Stage 1 : Preparing Your Body
You’ll begin by taking medication to gently pause your natural menstrual cycle. This step helps make the next stages of treatment more effective. The medication may be given as a daily injection (which you’ll be guided on how to give yourself) or as a nasal spray. This process usually takes around two weeks.

Stage 2 : Stimulating the Ovaries
Once your cycle is paused, you’ll take a fertility hormone, known as FSH, which encourages your ovaries to produce more eggs. This step increases the number of eggs available, giving the clinic more options for creating healthy embryos.

Stage 3 : Monitoring Progress
Your clinic will closely monitor your progress with ultrasound scans and, sometimes, blood tests. Before collecting the eggs, you’ll receive an injection of hCG, a hormone that helps the eggs fully mature.

Stage 4 : Collecting the Eggs
You’ll be sedated as your eggs are collected using a thin needle that goes through the vagina into the ovaries, guided by ultrasound. This minor procedure usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes. You may feel some mild cramps or light bleeding afterward.

Stage 5 : Fertilizing the Eggs
The collected eggs are fertilized in the lab, either with a fresh sperm sample from your partner or thawed donated sperm. The healthiest, most active sperm are carefully selected, and in some cases, a single sperm, carefully selected by specialized techniques, is injected directly into each egg, a method called ICSI (intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection). The fertilized embryos then grow in the lab for up to six days, and the best one or two embryos are chosen for transfer. After egg collection, you’ll also receive hormone support to help prepare your womb for the embryo.

Stage 6 : Preimplantation Genetic Testing
PGT is an advanced technique used in IVF to identify embryos with the correct number of chromosomes or without specific inherited genetic disorders. This allows fertility specialists to select the healthiest embryos for transfer, increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy, reducing the risk of miscarriage, and helping prevent certain genetic conditions from being passed on to the child. PGT is particularly recommended for patients with a history of recurrent pregnancy loss, advanced maternal age, or known genetic conditions in the family.

Stage 7 : Cryopreservation (Optional)
Cryopreservation is a specialized process used in IVF treatment to freeze and store reproductive cells or embryos at extremely low temperatures for future use. This technique helps preserve eggs, sperm, or embryos by suspending their biological activity, allowing them to remain viable for months or even years. It is even possible to transport frozen biological samples over long distances.
Cryopreservation offers patients flexibility in their fertility journey, enabling them to plan pregnancies at a later time without compromising the quality of their reproductive material. In IVF, frozen embryos can also be thawed and transferred in future cycles, increasing the cumulative chance of achieving a successful pregnancy.
It is also used for individuals undergoing medical treatments that may affect fertility, such as chemotherapy, or for those who wish to delay parenthood for personal or medical reasons.

Stage 8 : Transferring the Embryo
A few days later, the selected embryo(s) will be carefully placed in your womb through a thin tube, or catheter. This step is usually simple and doesn’t require sedation. You and your doctor will decide in advance how many embryos to transfer.

FAQ
Frequently asked Questions
What is IVF, and how does it work?
IVF (in vitro fertilization) is a fertility treatment where eggs are retrieved from a woman’s ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory. The fertilized egg (embryo) is then transferred into the woman’s womb to grow. IVF can use the couple’s own eggs and sperm or donor materials, offering hope to individuals struggling with infertility.
Who is IVF suitable for?
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is suitable for individuals and couples who are facing fertility challenges and have not been successful with other treatments. It is commonly recommended for women with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, endometriosis, ovulation disorders, or diminished ovarian reserve. IVF is also suitable for men with low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or other male factor infertility issues. In addition, it is an option for couples experiencing unexplained infertility, those with a history of recurrent miscarriages, or individuals using donor eggs, sperm, or embryos. IVF is also widely used by same-sex couples and single individuals who wish to build a family. In some cases, IVF is recommended when genetic testing (such as PGT) is needed to reduce the risk of passing on inherited conditions.
How long does the IVF process take?
The IVF process typically takes 6 to 9 weeks, depending on individual circumstances and treatment protocols. It includes preparation (suppressing the menstrual cycle), stimulating the ovaries, egg retrieval, fertilization, embryo transfer, and the waiting period for results.
Is IVF painful?
While IVF is not usually painful, certain steps may cause mild discomfort. Hormonal injections can cause temporary side effects like bloating or mood swings. Egg retrieval involves light sedation, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure, though some cramping afterward is normal.
What are the success rates of IVF?
Success rates depend on factors like age, egg and sperm quality, and the cause of infertility. For women under 35, the success rate is about 32% per cycle, decreasing with age. Your fertility specialist can provide tailored insights into your chances of success.
The following statistics reflect the success rates of IVF treatments in 2019, specifically for women who used their own eggs combined with their partner’s sperm. The data is measured per embryo transferred, providing insights into successful pregnancy and live birth outcomes according to Human Fertilization and Embryo Authority (HFEA)
- 32% for women under 35
- 25% for women aged 35 to 37
- 19% for women aged 38 to 39
- 11% for women aged 40 to 42
- 5% for women aged 43 to 44
- 4% for women aged over 44
Are there risks or side effects with IVF?
Risks include mild side effects from hormonal medications (e.g., bloating, headaches), ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), and a small chance of multiple pregnancies. Clinics take precautions to minimize risks and ensure the safest possible treatment.
Can IVF guarantee a baby?
While IVF greatly improves the chances of conception, it doesn’t guarantee a baby. Success depends on several factors, including age, fertility issues, and the clinic’s expertise. However, it remains one of the most effective fertility treatments available today.
How many embryos are transferred during IVF?
The number of embryos transferred depends on your medical history, age, and clinic policy. Typically, one or two embryos are transferred to balance the chance of success with the risk of multiple pregnancies. This is discussed before the procedure.
Is there anything I can do to improve my chances of IVF success?
Adopting a healthy lifestyle can help. Focus on a balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight, avoid smoking and alcohol, and manage stress through relaxation techniques. Following your doctor’s advice and adhering to medication schedules are equally crucial.
What happens if IVF is unsuccessful?
If IVF doesn’t succeed, your doctor will review the cycle to identify areas for improvement. Options may include adjusting the protocol, trying another cycle, or exploring alternatives like donor eggs, donor sperm, or surrogacy. Support is available to help you decide the next steps.
